In my previous blog I discussed about Transparency International report (2019) and its results and suggestions to counter with corruption. As a resident of sub-continent in this blog I will discuss the ranking of countries of sub-continent on the basis of corruption perception index and suggestions of TI about sub-continent. There are two main countries in sub-continent, Pakistan and India.
First of all, discuss about India. According to TI report 2019 India is on 80th number and its score is 41 out of 100. In 2018 India’s rank was 78 which decreased in 2019 up to two points. This thing indicates that in India corruption increased in 2019. There were several reasons behind this increment of corruption. One the biggest reasons was the ban of old currency and issuance of new currency. This step was taken to counter with corruption but later on it proved main cause of corruption. This thing also led to very serious conditions in India, because Indian government banned old currency without any prior notice. One more thing which causes the increment of corruption was the deal of rafale aircraft with France. This deal was highlighted by Indian opposition and a petition was also claimed in Indian supreme court. When the petition was hearing in court, Indian government burnt the records of this deal which worked as fuel to fire.
Now, let’s discuss TI report 2019 and Pakistan. According to TI report Pakistan gained 32 numbers out of 100, which are the lowest one during the last decade. Pakistan ranked at 120 which was 117 in 2018. According to TI this report was based on the data from 2013-17. The main reason of decrements of ranking was Panama Leaks which created confusion in political parties. In Panama Leaks there was also the name of PM of Pakistan which caused embarrassment for Pakistanis. Opposition protested and demanded the resignation of PM and elections before time. Later on, due to the interruption of supreme court PM of Pakistan had to resign. Bureaucracy also played vital role in the increment of corruption. Different companies and housing societies started by government from 2013-17. Main purpose of these companies and housing societies was corruption.
Transparency International suggested different ways in order to counter with corruption which are given below.
The assurance of law and order.
Check the interruption of institutions.
appointment of intelligent officers on higher posts.
Check to terrorism.
